Born near Argyle, Minnesota, Richard Fitzsimons farmed before becoming interested in politics. He was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 1952, representing the 67th district. After 20 years in the House, he won a seat in the state Senate, retiring after one term. He was hired as executive director of the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers Association in 1975, and held that position until his death in 1991.
